Life, lately: Random edition

25th May 2010

So much to share and do, I’m a bit overwhelmed. Coupled by the fact it’s SO hard to accomplish anything the day back after a long weekend (which started on Thursday for us!), isn’t it?

So here’s a bunch of random…stuff.

Lucy and I have matching toe nails

Instants: Press buttons and hear funny noises! Chewbacca and Yeeeah! and Youarepirate are among my faves. Thanks to Jen O. for the link. Jen polluted the air all weekend with hot dog fumes.

Archie Comics on Facebook: Why I waited so long to join that page is beyond me.

My sister is traveling right now, and I feel lost without her on Google chat.

Shit My Kids Ruined: Peanut butter handprints. Microwaved Thomas the Tank Engine. Paint can down the carpeted stairs. Best site EVER.

Smashed Ontario red potatoes with olive oil, sea salt, pepper and parmeasan cheese. I'm launching a food section on the site this week!

Bunny in a hole! The highlight of Friday's zoo trip, according to Alice.

Knock-Off Wood: From a SAHM with expensive tastes and no money comes a HUGELY popular site of step-by-step directions to make a plethora of wood furniture. Absolutely amazing. And free!

Ugliest Tattoos — Gallery of Regrets: The Internet’s most hilarious and stupid tattoos.

This weekend I ate (chicken) sausage on a bun for the first time. Why didn’t any of you force me to do this YEARS ago? Slathered in ketchup, sweet-with-heat mustard and relish? Deeeelish.

They did this all weekend. *swoon!*

Monday afternoon. We were both in heaven. Don't judge.

Failbook: Funny Facebook status messages.

In a half hour, I have to pick up Lucy for a hair cut. Then we zip across town to pick up Alice. Home for a quick dinner. Eric arrives to take Lucy to ballet, while I stay with Alice and get her to bed. At 7:30 p.m. 10 people from my volunteer group arrive for a meeting.

My best girl friends and I are headed to the family cottage in just four weeks. I think a countdown is in order, hmmmm?

Alice is THE most affectionate baby. She hugged everyone all weekend long. I drank from that personalized glass (courtesy of this fine lady) all weekend long. T’was good times.

Alice blinks and smiles when she sees the camera. Lucy was distracted by, oh, fluff, probably. I was trying to see out my diva sun hat. Eric is...amused. Family Photo May 2010!

5th May 2010

The cork bath mat. Because I needed an excuse to drink more! YES!

Starting the worker ants early: The kids’ cubicle

Want one, please! The Sharky Tea Infuser

The Sweaty Cowboy: Fried SPAM, peanut butter, bacon and cheddar cheese inside a sliced Twinkie. via This is Why You’re Fat

If you’re craving something bad for you? Just hope on here. It’ll either make you gobble it up (because what’s on this site is SERIOUSLY worse than what you’re about to consume) or make you put it down slowwwwly

Our favourite quick & easy Easter crafts

1st April 2010

We craft every day at Chez McDougall-Foster, usually during Alice’s nap. It’s just part of Lucy’s being. She loves to create.

At Valentine’s Day, we strung decorated paper hearts across our mantle. I got lazy and left the string up, tucking it behind the lamps. Perfect for Eater, we decided!

Lucy and I spent a few hours the other week crafting mantle decorations out of paper plates: flowers, a bunny face, a rather freaky yellow chick, and some eggs. We used glitter (no crafts are done @ Chez McDougall-Foster without it), jewels, stickers, feathers, pipe cleaners, paint and markers. We topped it off with some ceramic egg cup holders and a bunny cart.

Voila! Easter mantle. And lots of excited jabbering for Alice and compliments from our visitors. I know the childishness of it may not appeal to everyone, but I figure the time when Lucy will want to craft and be so proud of her creations is very fleeting.

And hey — it helps guide the Easter Bunny here, too.

Hope he is good to all of you and your wee ones!

Our decorated eggs from last year (we're doing speckled ones tomorrow)

Fighting the flu

1st December 2009

So, did you get the H1N1 shot?

We, guiltily, have not yet. No excuse except we keep forgetting (OK, and maybe another reason, but I put it below in a lame attempt to hide it).

But.

Last week Alice had the flu. Albeit it was short — 24 hours — she still had it. To feel her shaking in my arms with the chills and watch her face turn red as she choked while vomitting in her crib at 2 a.m. was enough of a reminder that we must get the damn shot. I’ve been on second child flu watch ever since, too, just waiting for Lucy to get something.

(Tangent: Why do kids always throw up in the middle of the night? Why not at 9 a.m. when I’m completely awake and not half nekkid clutching my bathrobe? And why always in bed? Why not on the hardwood floors that are at least easier to clean? They’re born programmed this way, aren’t they?)

  • Flu clinics are now open to everyone, and the Region of Durham has a full list of local clinics here (many doctor’s offices are administering it, too)
  • No matter where you live in Ontario, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has links to every health unit in the province here.
  • They also have a really neat self-assessment tool for parents to determine if your child under five or youth/adult over 5 actually has the flu. Check it out here.
  • Pregnant? Here’s info on the unadjuvanted vaccine and why it’s so important to get the shot

We have a doctor’s appointment Thursday and will finally get this done and over with. I feel terrible admitting this, but I’ve also been subconsciously avoiding going because I’ll have both girls on my own. How have those of you with two done this? I figure I’ll have to get Lucy done first, ’cause I know Lucy will bolt once she sees Alice freak out. But then do I leave Lucy upset while Alice gets done? Do them both at once?

Help!

The Moms Fight the Flu blog tour is organized by Mom Central Canada to spread the word among Moms about the H1N1 virus & vaccine and what you should do if you think your child has the flu. By making sure Moms have access to reliable information we can help everyone stay healthier this season!

Potato prints

15th November 2009

potatoes_all.jpg

A while ago Lucy and I did some old school crafting: Potato prints!

We made some beautiful cards and pictues. This is a great way to use up potatoes, and I love that you can compost the materials when you’re done. We used simple craft paint. Lucy chose the shapes, and I carved them as best I could.

I have to admit these are often just as fun for her as they are for me! I totally felt like I was back in grade school, and loved it.
