Bumbo recall soon
25th October 2007
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling the insanely popular Bumbo Baby Sitter seat.
The CPSC has received 28 reports of babies falling out of the seat — including three skull fractures! — when the chairs were placed on tables. It can’t be long before Canada follows suit and extends its own recall.
his brings back horrible, vivid memories of when Lucy fell off the stove because of our stupidity. I can only imagine how the parents in those 28 reports (of which I’m sure there are more that have gone unreported) feel.
In an act of high standards, grace and corporate responsibility, Bumbo has launched an entire web site devoted to the recall and the safe use of the seat. Kudos to them.
Lucy, of course, is not surprised. She always hated the Bumbo. See here how the invisible hot spikes are gouging her skin, making her screech in terror.
In related news, the federal government has launched a catch-all web site (called Healthy Canadians) for recalled children’s products and food. I’m thrilled for the site, but saddened it even has to exist…
And if you want to subscribe to receive an email about said recalls, you can do so here.

People need to be more responsible for their actions and stop blaming ‘things’ for their blips and mishaps.
I am not making light of the situation at all, but the Bumbo doesn’t have any restraints, so why would someone put it on a counter or a table? That seems silly to me. Personally, I’m glad I have a Bumbo and I won’t be getting rid of it because of this recall because I love the way they work, even if Eirinn wouldn’t allow me to put her in it until she was about 4 or 5 months old. Now, if it were covered in lead paint, I would toss it, but because other parents have made poor decisions in how they chose to use it? I’ll be keeping mine for any subsequent children.

I am one of those mums who had a dreaded walker. My child never went down a flight of stairs and for me personally it was the best invention made. My child walked up and down the sidewalk in it and I was mighty happy, he weighed a ton and my back was breaking. Several of my friends at the time had one also and never a accident. I like that the dangers are brought to mind, but like everything in life most things if used responsibly are A okay, thankfully I never had to worry about paint, if there was a problem it came and went without my knowledge.
Carly, what’s up with those weird posts above?
They’re trackbacks — other sites have linked to DRB.
I had a walker… it was the greatest thing ever!!! I guess as long as there is supervision with these products I don’t think that they can be all bad…
I never had the chance to have a Bumbo chair, but from what I hear I would love to get one for any future kiddies!
funny how the blog post above is about bumbo recalls and yet the ads on the right side of the page are all for selling bumbos…
*scratches head* hmmm… lol
I guess it’s kind of like the removal of the cold meds from the North American market (it still makes me mad) – they didn’t count in the ‘idiot’ factor. Once again people .. use your noggin for something other than holding up your hat.
These products are perfectly safe – if used CORRECTLY.

I feel badly for innovative companies who have provided a great product (both my boys loved their Bumbo and so did we) because parents don’t take responsibility for reading and following safety instructions. Good thing their little ones aren’t yet old enough to learn from the blame game they’re playing…thankfully, you still have a few years to grow up before your kids notice folks!
