Cold comfort
5th October 2009
Each night we have to lay it on the far side of her bed, parallel to her growing body. It must be on top of the covers. It must be reachable and in sight at all times.
When we sneak in before we bed down for the night, it is almost always wrapped around her neck and chin like a boa. Even in slumber if we try to move it, she wakens, or holds on tighter, or burrows in.![]()
Lucy calls it her Cold Blankie. Cold because it has holes in it, and the yarn itself feels chilled to her. Rubbing Cold Blankie on ouchies makes them feel better. Snuggling with Cold Blankie keeps the monsters away. Quiet time on the couch always includes Cold Blankie.
Our family friend, (Auntie) Kathryn, gave it to me at Lucy’s baby shower. We’ve no idea why Lucy attached on to this blanket over all the others. But it’s her favourite. Asleep or awake.
Do your kids have favourite blankets, stuffed animals or other objects they can’t live without?

Jaxson has a knitted blankie that his Great Grandma made him that he has been attached to since he was 9 months old. He loves it so much that my Grandma made him a smaller version for him that is easier to carry around and take to daycare.I think he likes the softness of it, because when he got the smaller blankie he became attached to it immediately. He MUST have it at bedtime & naptime, he uses “blankie” as his pillow.
Kylah has this pink shirt of mine that I gave her when she was about 4 months old. I was wanting her to go to sleep on her own and someone suggested giving her a shirt that smells like me. Right when I gave it to her, she rolled onto her side pulled my shirt to her nose and fell fast asleep. She still sleeps with it to this day.
She also has her “baby boy” that a friend gave her when Liam was born. He goes EVERYWHERE with us and she takes it to bed.
Liam has a blue knitted blankie that my mom made him when he was little. It’s so soft and cuddly. We lie it flat on his bed and he just dives for it and snuggles in. So cute.
William has a blankie too, and so does my 14 month old Joshua!! Isn’t it funny how they grow so attached to certain things. Both boys are actually really attached to this one teddy bear, it was William’s and he calls it ‘baby bear’ recently Joshua has grown attached to it too, I really need to try and find another one because I can see fighting in my future over who gets to sleep with ‘baby bear’
Lilo has 3 blankets – or gig-giggies (for some reason she started calling them that before she could say blanket). They are small polar fleece blankets, but she’s getting to big for them now. I need to make her a bigger one. And it’s a pain that it’s all 3 of them – each night on top of her comforter in the same order; frog, diamond and heart gig-giggy.
Isla just likes one of her knit blankets so she can chew on it.
Eric (age 4) has 3 blankies – yellow, blue and green – and they are thankfully interchangeable. We kept one at daycare and 2 at home until he was done daycare this summer. He still needs them to sleep, and I also find them wrapped around his neck when I check on him before I go to bed. Andrew (19 months) isn’t attached to anything (except me) yet. He likes his blankies, and likes to fetch them at bedtime, but is not attached to them the way Eric is to his.
Yeah – ME! I am not kidding. My oldest, Isaac, does have a blankie and a stuffed animal – actually it’s the beanie baby Chiwhawa (sp?) dog I bought years before my husband and I even married. The blankie is a receiving blanket with racecars my MIL made for him when he was a newborn. But while they are favoured they certainly do not hold the same magically powers Lucy’s does. Most nights now he completely forgets them if they are out of sight. Me on the otherhand am the thing he absolutely needs in his bed to sleep, when he’s sick, etc.
Lexy has “Kittie” a grey and white striped tabby that her Auntie Stephie bought her when she was very little – heaven help us if we’ve left Kittie at Grandma’s and it’s bed time.
Caity has “George” (looks like Curious George) a stuffed monkey her Uncle Jeff gave her when she was first born and he visited us in the hospital. She must, absolutely and at all times be somehow touching George in order to sleep properly. World War III has been known to start if he falls out of the crib. She also has “Ooo-Ooo” (the sound a monkey makes) a pink monkey her Daddy gave her that she carries everywhere.
There’s nothing cuter when they’re all curled up, fast asleep, little hands holding their cherished toy – so sweet. It’s nice to know they get such comfort from the toys.
carter (4) has his hippo – it was a gift from my mom when he was born, from pottery barn kids – it’s so soft and plush and seems to be filled with beans…it’s been in the washing machine so much i have lost count!……he must have him when he sleeps (and he actually sleeps on him like a pillow!)
when we had easton 13 months ago we went back to pottery barn and got him a puppy version – we hope he loves him just as much as carter loves that hippo!
Carson has never been attached to anything – well except his soother but he has been without that since he was 2.
Hannah however must have her blankie and pinkie puppy. The blanket is a fleece blanket – that her Auntie Lissa made her (in fact I had my sister-in-law make a smaller version because when she was learning to walk she kept triping on this!).
However I have noticed that for the past few weeks, her must have item is her new Groovy Girl that she got when we “lost” her soother!!
I bought my greatgranddaughter Emma a rabbit head with a hankie sized blanket attached to it and she has to have it when she goes to bed or out the door or if she’s tired and she’s 4 this coming Feb…..she calls it Buddy and it has been washed so often it is now a no-color gray…..
My 15 month old Olivia has Chewy. That’s what we call this flourescent green stuffed “thing” my mother gave her when she was a baby. We have no idea what type of animal it is suppose to be – there have been many an arguement between family and friends as to what it is. Looks sort of like a cross between a giraffe and a cow. Anyway, Chewy became it’s name when we couldn’t decide. Olivia loves to rub his main and tail and chew on him – hence Chewy!!
My two both have “kitty” a TY stuffed animal called “kitty hugs” orginally Abby, the oldest was given both Kitty Hugs and Puppy Hugs – Puppy just never caught on – Actually there is only one original kitty, but we have gone through 6 more during that time in fear the original kitty would be lost. And of course, whatever Abby does, baby boy Dylan follows – kitties are the bane of our existence – never out of the car, only out of the car to the house – and god forbid the terror that invades if one has been misplaced…She’s almost four…will her fascination end soon?
My granddaughter Grace has a Carters blanket (wooly cream color on top, brown silk on the bottom) and she used to call it her Woobie but lately she calls it her Soft & Silky. S&S MUST accompany to naps and bedtime or all hell breaks loose. My son had to go buy an additional one to leave at my house just in the event S&S got left at home when they began their trek my way in the wee, wee hours of the morning. Which has happened a time or two and made for a very unpleasant day. None of my kid, nor my other granddaughter were ever attached to anything like that.
