New Dora

30th June 2009

dora.jpgLucy’s idol is getting a makeover.

I’m not sure how I feel about it.

I’ve always loved that Dora was, well, so toddler-like: chubby, bobbed hair, socks pulled up, running shoes, durable and basic clothes (could do without the belly hanging out, though).

Now Matell & Nickelodeon have…made her grow up. She’s got hair down to her arse, highlights (!), eyelashes, is skinny and — I will NEVER forgive them for this — wearing leggings.

How is she supposed to climb tall mountain, ride in Benny’s hot air balloon or dance with the troll under the bridge in that get up? Have you seen those shoes? Ballet flats? Gimme a break.

I feel like she’s lost some of her innocence. But is it just a natural progression and growing up of a character? I’ve been rather happy that Archie and the gang have remained in high school for, oh, 60+ years.

Thoughts?

That is SO disappointing!! My son hasn’t reached the Dora watching stage yet, but I always liked her character for the reasons you mentioned- chubby, toddler like- to me, nothing really stood out from her appearance, it was more about her personality! So sad. Highlights, eyelashes and skinny pants… next she’ll be texting Boots on her cell phone!

Ohno, I never thought about what they might have done to poor Boots!

If he’s in skinny pants, I may have to boycott…

I don’t think they are getting rid of this dora are they? I thought they were keeping the “toddler” Dora, but also making her older to appeal to school age children… not sure though…

And sorry to break it to you carly, but leggings are back!!! lol

I too love Dora for all the things that you mentioned. Hannah loves Dora (and Carson will occasionally watch) – and I would hate for them to think that girls have to be skinny and all “made up”. Honestly how can she do all the exploring and still look so good!! lol
(and what about Diego and his sister – are they too going to look older?)

Dora does not have to “progress” into the next stage. It is not like they are losing money and need to try something new. THey should just leave her the way that she is!

Well Caity just looked at the two pictures and identified the ‘old’ Dora and wondered who the new on was. I guess since she’s been around for the past 100 years, she should grow up sooner or later… are they revamping Diego too?

Looks like we’re still in the Barbie era where we set unrealistic goals on our kids.

I know they were finally replacing the voice of Dora with a 20 year old college student or something silly like that …

I like the leggings, but the flats are unrealistic for all the adventures. She seems to be more proportional too, not so bobbleheaded…

What’s next, Dora gets a boyfriend? *sigh*

Oh, I didn’t realize there was changes happen to Miss Dora. My little Miss hasn’t been interested in Dora for some time now… maybe that will change??? Maybe I don’t like the thought of welcoming a new Dora back??? Highlights? What is with that??? It is like the soap opera world where young ones grow into adults between seasons. Where is the nice slow transition for Dora? Or like Carly spoke about… why not just leave her alone?

poor Dora … I’m with you Carly, they should have just gotten rid of her belly hanging out. I don’t like how skinny the new one is.

I kinda like the new Dora, but maybe it is because my daughter is out of the toddler stages now and doesn’t relate to Dora anymore. She loves Bratz dolls now, so to me the new Dora looks innocent compared to some of the Bratz dolls out there.

My little guy is just getting into Dora, and I’m not sure what I think of the new Dora… I’m with you Carly on the fact that Archie and the gang never really aged (Although I think I saw somewhere that he was proposing to Veronica(!)) but I suppose that our society now a days doesn’t believe the old addage “If it aint broke DON’T FIX IT!!” If it’s not new, hip and on top of the charts, it’s not good enough :P

What on earth are we teaching our poor little people?

So true!! There is no need to make any character grow up! We all grew up and took comfort that our favourite TV characters have stayed the same innocent people for our children. What if Elmo was a teenager going into university, or Bert and Ernie shared a room in a retirement home? It just doesn’t make sense! These characters are supposed to stay the same and appeal to each generation, not grow up with a current age group.

I’m horrified… and not just cause of the leggings…I’m with you Carly, they are horrible and no one should wear them unless they are doing some sort of physical activity.

I don’t and never have watched Dora but to make her look like all those all other images of girls out there… it just makes me so sad for what little girls are growing up thinking they are supposed to look like. And don’t get me started on those Bratz dolls… they just make me ANGRY!

Bratz are banned from my house. No negotiations at all.

Barbie is allowed as long as she has a profession (we have vet Barbie and photography Barbie, although WHO WORKS IN THOSE OUTFITS? Vet Barbie is wearing a pink dog collar, and photography Barbie is wearing shorts so tiny her ass hangs out without even bending over).
