No longer for sale
18th March 2009
Today marks 12 days since I gave up dairy.
And today is day 10 of a much happier baby.
Evil dairy.
Sweet, creamy, cereal-hugging, blueberry-coating dairy. Oh, how I ache for you.
But I don’t miss Miss Screech Alot, so it’s absolutely worth it.
Alice’s poops, however, are still green. But they are normal breastfed baby consistency — not the liquid that destroyed countless onesies and was so painful for her to pass. They’re just avacado or four leaf clover or pea coloured. It’s like a rainbow! But the same colour!
Our doctor, who we visited today, is not worried about the colour. That should right itself over time as Alice’s digestive system continues to develop. Our baby is thriving (up a pound and half an inch since our last visit, to 15 lbs., 26″) and not The Angry anymore, and that’s all that matters.
And even with one tooth through and another busting its way up, we still have so much of this:

What have you been eating? I know you’ve been very careful to not eat food with dairy even cooked into it, so I was wondering…what’s left? Probably just fresh vegetables and fruit and chicken? Makes for a good diet!
Yep, lots of that.
Thankfully my fave crackers (Wheat Thins and Triscuit) are dairy-free. I made some cookies with dairy-free margarine. Also picked up some soy yogurt (a sad comparison, but at least it’s something), sorbet and popsicles. Chips and salsa.
The bread products we buy “may contain traces” of milk ingredients, but they are not listed (I’m assuming they mean contamination at the factory), so I’ve continued to eat it.
Soy milk in my tea is not bad at all. I used it to make scrambled eggs last week, too.
But we went out for breakfast yesterday, and I had to have DRY toast because the diner uses margarine. That sucked. Eating out has been the hardest.
I miss cheese. And cereal. And our fave chicken fingers, which contain milk ingredients in the coating and meat.
It’s actually not that bad. Reading labels is the largest challenge.
Glad she is better; sad you are dairy deprived!!
Yay for baby Alice – glad to hear she is feeling better!
I cut out dairy when I was breastfeeding Maddie, when she was quite young. And I hear you – it was tough. And you’re far more studious about it than I was – I just remember sorely missing my cheese and crackers snacktime, and milk.
The green poops took a little longer to go away for her as well, but the gas and grump was gone almost instantly.
Hope she grows out of it like Maddie did – when she was around 6 months I started to introduce dairy back into my diet and she was able to handle it. It was nice to be able to eat what I wanted again!
I’m so glad this worked! It’s so tough when they’re so grumpy for so long. It sucks for you. Totally. (I would miss chocolate the most.) But yes, living with “Miss Screech Alot” must have been horrible. And at least now there is an answer. And a solution. Hopefully she’ll grow out of it!
I am so happy that Alice is doing so much better and she sure looks happy now and that is the most important thing. You will soon be able to go back to ice cream, etc., once she gets a little older. Hugs and Kisses.
She’s so precious. I just love the twinkle in her eye when she is smiling!~
