Away, soon

4th September 2007

I’ve two stories to write the next two days, which means my skin feels like there are bugs crawling underneath, I’m grumpy, distracted and generally pissy.

Wanna come over?

Speaking of work, I’m going to a conference in Prince Edward Island soon. For three entire days. AWAY FROM HOME.

As much as I’m so excited to go (Anne of Green Gables tour, wine tasting, free food, my own hotel room), I’m literally nauseous thinking of being away from Lucy and Spencer Dog for so long.

Eric understands that I’m leaving and coming back — the babies don’t. Especially Spencer, who is now so used to me being home all day with him. I worry he’ll be nervous and confused in this big empty house.

I do believe Lucy will do better. I’ve already started talking to her about it, that Mummy is going away for a few days, but she’s coming home soon after. She knows she’s still going to Julia’s, and that some of her favourite people (Auntie Jenni, Nana) will be picking her up and playing with her until Daddy gets home.

I know she understands some of it. When we started really drilling Julia into her head (“You’re going to Julia’s on Tuesday, right? And you’re going to play-play-play?”), she started saying yes (“Dep”) and waving bye-bye. I hope she’ll start piecing the trip together soon.

Thankfully my flight leaves at 7:25 a.m. (gak), so I have to leave the house by 5 when everyone will still be asleep. No heartbreaking goodbyes — just soft kisses as my family dozes. Unfortunately I won’t get home until after 10 p.m. three days later. I may have to accidentally (whoops! Did I just fall onto the light switch and simultaneously bang the crib?) wake Lucy up…

I went away on business for 5 days in May. It was very strange knowing that my whole family was going through their (mostly) regular routines without me…school, work, daycare. In some ways it was very freeing (showering and getting ready in a hotel room BY YOURSELF — heavenly!!) Home was a welcome place when I came home though. I missed the sounds and smells and drool.
In a few weeks my husband and I are going away for the weekend. That never feels quite as strange because it is over the weekend and the kids are not really doing their regular thing — they usually get to hang out with my parents. This time though my pleasure trip is followed by 4 days of business in California. I will be dropped off on the way home from our pleasure trip at an airport in the US to fly straight to the conference. Our trip was booked before I knew about the conference. It means that I will be away from home for over a week. Just the organizing alone feels overwhelming. I have no doubt that all will go well, but I’m already looking forward to coming home and I haven’t even left yet.
