The winners

31st May 2007

And the first ever Ugly Baby Clothes Contest winners are:

Trippy_velour_seal.jpgFirst place: Trippy Velour Seal from Becky of Seattle, WA, USA.

Judge Jen said: The colours are obnoxious, the seal is scary (why is he wearing an elf hat?), and the mix-matched sleeves and legs are bizzare. And I know baby pajamas are made with short legs to account for the diaper, but this is ridiculous! Judge Leanne added: No one should ever wear that much velour. I shiver at the thought of it!

Becky wins the Kushies Zolo bobbles toy from The Cuddly Bunny in Port Perry and the pampering gift basket from Lesley at Mom and Kids Stuff in Pickering.

Scary_fairy.jpgSecond place: Scary Fairy from Carolyn of Oshawa, ON, Canada.

Judge Carly said: The three-toed, thick legged, praying baby fairy is positively evil. Throw in the bird-laden, lacy collar, ruffles and sheer curtain fabric, and we have the most obnoxious dress ever.

Carolyn wins a $25 gift certificate for Once Upon a Child in Ajax.

Meee_ow_.jpgThird place: Mee-ow! from Jennifer of New Westminster, BC, Canada.

Judge Ted said: I swear to god, this thing will absolutely give me nightmares for the rest of my life. No matter where I go, the eyes keep following me! I can understand why Jennifer’s friend didn’t even bring this home, as the devil isn’t welcome in my home, either. Judge Jen added: This looks like the feline version of Kujo. In fact, the black splotches under the mouth look a bit like he just got through eating the poor baby who was shoved into this sweater.

Jennifer wins Baby Einstein Discover and Play Soft Colour Blocks and the infamous airplane spoons.

Best worst animal print: Mystery Animals from Amy of Courtice, ON, Canada.Mystery_animals.jpg

Judge Ted said: I don’t know what freaky eyed demon monstrosities they have scampering around the parks in the Ukraine, but I’m not sure they belong on a onesie. Judge Leanne added: Not only does this poor child have to wear such a horrible outfit, but to top it all off, nothing matches at all.

Amy wins a $20 gift certificate from Natural Earth Tones in Oshawa.

A_leopard_on_LSD_maybe.jpgCruelest Parent Award (for actually dressing your baby in the offending outfit): A Leopard on LSD, maybe? from Jessica of Davis, CA, USA.

Judge Jen said: Only a 64-year-old hooker should wear hot pink leopard print. And the baby in the picture does not look like a 64-year-old hooker. Judge Ted added: AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA *snort* HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!

Jessica wins a necklace from Avon.

Thanks to everyone who entered, and the very creative judges! I’m left very disturbed by how much ugliness is lurking in baby closets around the globe…

I don’t know how the judges decided – I would have picked every single entry to win. But that velour outfit gives me shudders when I think of some clothing designer believing it’s appropriate for infants.
