I've always had great success washing terry cloth animals and baby dolls. I do the washing on the cold water/delicate wash cycle and the drying on the lowest heat setting and I place the dolls on the rack that came with my dryer for drying sweaters. No thumping! I tied them in a pillowcase, and added some towels to muffle the sound. Still sounds like I'm drying watermelons, though... Will let you know how they turn out. Thanks for the tips! Put a blanket in the dryer with them though cause it is really loud. Their heads will be all soft and disgusting when you take them out but they go back to normal.
