Alone (with video)

9th February 2007

It was 10:14 a.m. I’d just dropped Lucy off at daycare.

I stood on the landing at the bottom of the stairs listening to the silence and realized this was the first time I’d been in the house alone since February 24, 2006, the Friday before Lucy was born.

The first time ever. In almost a year.

I almost started shaking at the possibilities. There were so many things I could do: clean out the upstairs cupboards, chat online, go through the bajillion photos on our computer, job search, run around the house naked — all uninterrupted.

Instead I had the longest, hottest shower in a year, and blasted my favourite music upstairs so loud the hanging pictures in the hallway shook. Then I met Jen for lunch.

The upstairs was power cleaned before Spencer and I picked Lucy up at 4 p.m. It was her longest stretch at daycare so far. She slept for two hours (of course) and the other kids call her "My Lucy."

I could get used to this whole not-working-baby-in-daycare thing. At least a few days a week. If it wouldn’t bankrupt us. Very, very quickly.

When I missed her, I watched this, the most hilarious video of Lucy laughing. If you’re not smiling when this is over, you are evil and wretched.

Happy weekend!

Wait until one of the daycare kids says “Excuse me…Lucy’s Mom” to get your attention. It is bound to happen and it is one of the sweetest things.

A leisurely shower and loud music would top my list of things to do without kids too. And funny enough cleaning, uninterrupted, without having to open and close a safety gate every time I wanted to go up and down the stairs would be pretty near the top.
