Two weeks

13th March 2006

It’s only fitting, as a new mom, that it’s taken me two days to write this — finding the time has been difficult.

I’m going to go against every journalistic fibre in my body and type this as it appears in Lucy’s journal, sans editing. I think it’s more real that way, showing the random thoughts that popped into my tired head…

My Lucy,

You turned two weeks old today. I can’t believe how quickly the days have passed even though while we’re living them they feel long.

It’s hard to know any of your patterns when you’ve only been in the world for 14 days, but you are settling into a pretty content baby. You’ll get gassy and your wee face will turn a startling red and your mouth will open wide and loud.

We love watching your expressions. You scrunch up your chubby cheeks and wiggle your eye brows and tie your mouth into a point. You blow bubbles and stick out your tongue. Right now you are in your dad’s arms and he’s sticking his tongue out at you and you’re doing it back. Whether that’s because you have to poop, we’re not sure. But it sure does thrill us.

You love looking at our faces and I like to read you books in our rocking chair in the nursery. It’s amazing to see you concentrate on my voice. Your daddy often carries you and watches himself in the mirrors downstairs — in awe of you, this being we created.

When you’re gassy, we put you in the football hold across our arm, facing down, clinging and rubbing your back. You love this!

You have an awful habit of peeing while we’re changing you and we’re constantly replacing the blanket on your change table and putting you in clean onesies.

You like to be on our skin and moving around bopping and walking. We give you Bunny Kisses between your big blue-gray eyes and nuzzle your neck.

Breastfeeing has been a challenge, but I love our time together when we’re feeding. You make the funniest noises! Growling and mewing and high-pitched squeeks.

So far you have days and nighs in check and sleep for three hour blocks between feeds. I get nervous when you sleep during the day, thinking you’ll be up all night but so far you do go down.

When you’re particularly cranky and fussy we call you Lucifer.

You seem to like baths although they’re hard to do. You’re so slippery and small. You scream and scream afterwards, but like it when I rub lotion on your clean skin.

Your daddy changes your diapers more than I do and we laugh when you full your pants just after a change.

You love to sleep on our chests. When you’re hungry your strong little head will bounce across our chests, rooting for boob. You left a trail of drool on daddy’s shirt the other day.

Spencer Dog is protective of you, but also jealous of the attention you get. He often sniffs and licks your head.

You also like it when we sing to you: Lucy, Lucy, Lucy Girl, You’re my pretty Lucy Girl.

We’re still stunned that we created you, our wee girl. We can’t wait for you to grow.

Love Mummy
