I REALLY don’t want to see that…

4th January 2006

Last night we had our first "survive childbirth/learn how to not kill the baby" class at the Ajax hospital.

We’re an odd bunch: two chartered accountants, a gym teacher, a psychoanalyst, a teacher, a professor, a few engineers, some small business owners. All the women are due around the same time, between the end of February (the professor and I) and mid-March.

This class was mostly information, learning about the different stations of labour, the difference between dialiation and effacement (sucking on Life Savers as a learning tool), plus two breathing techniques and positions.

Eric scored bonus points for massaging my shoulders without being asked and saying the best thing about my pregnancy was it had brought us closer together. This was juxtaposed by the worst thing about my pregnancy: my getting swollen feet and asking for foot rubs (Eric hates feet. He failed to mention that I ALWAYS wash said feet before he has to even look at them).

Next week we’ll all be terrifed by The Video. The one that shows three births. And not from behind the shoulders, either.

I dunno about the other moms to be in the class, but I don’t want a mirror to see what’s happening when baby is coming out, and Eric will be firmly (and very willingly) up beside my head.

At least they’re smart and show us The Video long after it’s too late to turn back…
