Ajax labour and delivery closing
1st December 2005
Now what are we supposed to do?
The Rouge Valley hospital announced today it is "temporarily" closing the obstetrics department in Ajax because they can’t get enough on-call pediatricians. They feel it is unsafe to continue deliveries there if there is not one available.
The move is in effect as of Dec. 14. They kindly request all us knocked up women drive to their SCARBOROUGH site now to deliver.
So in the middle of winter, we’ll have to load lumbering, labouring me into the car, on the 401 for a minimum half hour drive to another region to have the baby. To a hospital I’ve never even been in. That’s just lovely.
One of the things we loved most about our area was how close we are to the hospital; it takes less than 5 minutes to get there.
We don’t even know if the January labour classes we’ve signed up for at the Ajax site are still happening.
What a sad, stressful, frustrating day.

I’ve been reading your blog with much amusement; it’s brought back memories…and a sigh of relief that I never have to live through a pregnancy again (grin).
I’d say Centenary is the next closest hospital. I’ve had 3 c-sections there and I can honestly say the doctors are fabulous and the maternity ward and the nurses are absolutely wonderful. You might want to check it out. According to many of my friends Oshawa is a horrid place to have a baby.
